Hi, our hand water hand pump started leaking a few days ago, when out camping. It is firetail, 2017 also. Does this sound like your problem?

Luigi

Our hand pumps also failed on our Mk3. I cut new diaphragms from Target ice block moulds and fitted them. Probably don't work quite as efficiently as genuine diaphragms but do work and have lasted now for at least 2 years.

I have seen a lot of comments on here regarding these diaphragms and many people replacing them and i'm just wondering if the diaphragms are being "flexed" before tightening the screws? its something i was taught when doing fuel pump diaphragms.....Please note i have not disassembled mine as yet cos they aint leakin.......(i have got a kit proved by the previous owner)
Cheers

Hi Lister could you give a short/quick explanation on how its done?

Hi There, The theory goes that a diaphragm wont move freely if its clamped tight in a relaxed position. With fuel pumps we would fit the new diaphragm and put all the screws back in finger tight the move the lever of the fuel pump to its maximum compression. Whilst holding the lever in this position we would then tighten the screws. This gave the diaphragm that little bit extra free movement and also take the stress out of the diaphragm. I've noticed on my hand pumps that they are quite hard to move back and forth and thought i would disassemble them at some stage just to gauge there condition.

MarkA, do the holes line up with the standard pump? Or did you have to drill different ones?

Thanks for that info Lister.

I needed to make a cover plate and drill a large single hole in it to fit the alternative pump, a hole saw from Bunnings and a little file work sorted it.

And a Mountian of stuff I don't think we need but apparently it's vital camp equipment.

Hi Heston mine didn't leak just the hand pump pulled off the little plastic bit inside that works the diaphragm.
It could be a case for you that the diaphragm itself has cracked.

great little pump, fast and so far (12 months old) super reliable   we have a MK3 with only one tank and no electrics to worry about at the back, it can be adapted to run a switch and electric pump  (well at least thats what the salesman at Whitworths Marine advised.  not sure how as I didn't want this option)
Hi MarkA thanks for your feedback, i think i will go down this path plus an additional switched electric tap aswell.
Ideally the should both fit in the same space.

Our Mk3 12v pump leaks water into the jerry storage right next to it and water runs out onto the ground from below the pump. I have a seal provided by the PO but haven't tried it yet.

Replace the pump with a proper well constructed one when it fails - Shurflo pumps are quality units... our Mk4 van came with an inferior version: "Seaflo" pump which failed and has been replaced.
